Search Engine Optimization, or SEO, has been necessary for web traffic generation and online marketing since the rise of Google and other search engines in the late 90s. The concept behind SEO is that certain aspects of a website or the content on a website can appeal to the ranking mechanism used by a search engine, so that website appears closer to the top of the search results.

A popular website with good content will ideally rank highly in search results, but many methods of SEO attempt to cheat the system. Artificial methods of SEO, like keyword abuse or building unnatural links are a big reason that Google and other search engines keep tweaking the exact details of their page ranking systems. We stay on top of changes in search ranking mechanisms to ensure our clients always have maximum visibility.

The current trends in SEO are all based around content as a method of traffic generation. As we've talked about on this blog before, a website's content and how that content is presented across social media platforms makes a big difference in website traffic. So, while some people decide to flood their sites with low-quality content, the optimal thing to do is to make your website a resource -- if people want to read what you have to say, the search engines will realize it.

At the end of the day, it's all about the content. At Distinct Image Marketing, we develop custom content strategies to fit our clients' business needs. But we don't claim that tweaking a couple of lines of code will magically make a site rocket to the top of search results. That's wrong, and that's why some people think SEO is a sham.
